Unisphere: The Biggest World on Earth (1964)
Discusses concepts of design behind the unisphere of the U S Steel Corporation, and its construction at the New York World's Fair. Ken Smith sez: "The biggest world on Earth." "The largest representation of our globe ever attempted." "The largest stainless steel structure ever built." This U.S. Steel presentation is full of hyperbole, but so what? This film features lots of construction footage and countless references to the Eiffel Tower -- but no mention of the infinitely superior Terrestrial Globe at the Paris Expo of 1900. U.S. Steel Co. Why We Fight 2 - The Nazis Strike
"The Nazis Strike," Chapter II of Frank Capra's "Why We Fight" series, summarizes Adolph Hitler's plan for world conquest and Germany's full scale preparation in pursuit of this end. While the Nazis plead poverty and pacifism, they spend incredible amounts of money to prepare a war machine of unparalleled strength and destructive capability. While Hitler assures the other leaders of the world he has no interest in promoting National Socialism, he begins "softening up" future target nations by sponsoring local Nazi organizations in other countries. The film explains that the key to Germany's world conquest is the occupation of central Russia, a heartland rich in natural resources. Hitler begins his march in this direction by annexing Austria and part of Czechoslovakia. With these new territories, he now possesses a massive front against Poland, which he invades and conquers within three weeks. After the invasion of Poland, Britain and France declare war on Germany, which then signs a non-aggression pact with the Soviets so Hitler can re-focus his energy against his enemies to the west.

Why We Fight 1 - Prelude to War
"Prelude to War," Chapter I of Frank Capra's "Why We Fight" series, describes World War II as a battle between the "slave world" of fascism and the "free world" of American liberty. In the "slave world," the entire populations of Germany, Italy and Japan have been hoodwinked by madmen, opportunists who capitalized on their people's desperation and weakness to rise to power. These demagogues promised revenge for past losses, and in the process convinced their people to give up their rights and accept dictatorship. In the "free world," the principles of equality, freedom, and liberty characterize the greatest leaders, embodied in the works and words of Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln. This freedom is a threat to the fascist dictators of the Axis powers, who claim that democracy is weak and must be eradicated. The film claims that the ultimate goal of the Axis powers is to enslave the nations of the "free world," a desire made manifest in the Japanese invasion of Manchuria and Mussolini's destruction of Ethiopia.

Let's Join Joanie (1950) Failed TV Pilot
Failed TV pilot from 1950 called "Let's Join Joanie". Two years before she starred in the semi-popular 50's sitcom "I Married Joan", Joan Davis did this unsuccessful pilot. I don't know much about this pilot, Which curiously runs 33 minutes long despite the fact that it features no commercials. Don't watch it expecting comedy gold, But it does have historic value, and is kind of amusing.

The Fun of Being Thoughtful (1950)
Social guidance film for teenagers encouraging insight into the motives, tastes and desires of others. ============================================================= Shotlist SHOWS THAT SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT INVOLVES INSIGHT INTO THE MOTIVES, TASTES & DESIRES OF OTHERS. THIS INSIGHT, "THOUGHTFULNESS" IS SHOWN HERE TO BE INTELLIGENT EXERCISE & APPLICATION OF A FEW SOCIAL SKILLS; NOTICING WHAT OTHERS LIKE & WANT. 22:34:00 Teen at vending machine: "In this world it's every man for himself!" 22:36:20 Teen girl and boy sit next to each other on couch. Teen girl: "Tomorrow night....tomorrow night! I've gotta do something about a dress!" Boy: "You girls have one track minds. I haven't a thing to wear!" 22:37:32 Teen boy and girl cooking dinner together 22:41:12 Dad and son talking in living room. Off screen sister: "Eddie, [unintelligible] folks are coming yet?" Son: "They're here now, sis!" 22:14:17 Sister looking flustered in kitchen: "Here. Come help me then! Mashed potatoes! Do something! [good sequence of housewife freaking out] 22:42:06 Sister comes running downstairs with new dress: "Mom, Dad, it's beautiful!...Eddie look!" 22:42:21 CU Eddie whistling at sister Ken Smith sez: "Everywhere you go, people talk about thoughtfulness." With this premise in mind, we are wisked into the life of "Jane Proctor," a happy teen who is slavishly devoted to her "fine, thoughtful family." While uttering lines such as "It'd be the thoughtful thing to do," and "That's what makes thoughtfulness worthwhile!" Jane tidies her room, fixes dinner for the family, and fixes her geeky brother Eddie up with a date. In the end, Jane's thoughtfulness pays off ("A new dress!!!") and we leave the Proctor family basking in the sunshine of family togetherness. The script for this film flies in several directions at once, which makes it fun but a little hard to follow. Goggle-eyed "Jane" later starred in Making Your Own Decisions, super-geek Eddie (who has the best lines) appears in Developing Friendships, and mom has the lead role in Political Parties. With cameos by Sue from How To Say No, Bill from How Do You Know It's Love, and the candy machine from Our Country's Flag.

Siblings Don and Sue show how they keep themselves well groomed throughout the school week and for their Friday night dates. ================================================================= Ken Smith sez: This film details the grooming rituals of brother "Don" and sister "Sue". Both are incredibly neat; in fact, grooming seems to occupy their entire day, while their evenings are spent ironing outfits and polishing shoes. A man and woman narration team take Don and Sue's side with lines such as, "They look like the kind of people you'd like to know, don't they?" The narrators also point out specifics. "Sue avoids red nail polish, as it would call attention to her stubby hands." Don and Sue's "room" features what must be the world's smallest closet, which makes their extensive wardrobes all the more amazing. Shots: ironing; shining shoes; polishing nails; alarm clock; waking up in the morning; selecting a tie; cleaning fingernails; combing hair; looking in mirror; eating breakfast; Voiceovers: "Sue avoids red nail polish since it would call attention to her stubby hands." "Mother too keeps up a good appearance even around the house for that keeps up her spirits." "Their good grooming habits help them in friendships and business. For your success depends a great deal on how you look." How exercise will make you healthy and popular. ================================================================ Shows that exercise aids in health, co-operative activities and opportunities for recognition. Ken Smith remarks: Ernie, Jean, and Hal are three teens who have problems: Ernie is in "a run down condition," Jean is "shy and withdrawn," and Hal is "tense and irritable." But then all three join the Acrobatics Club at school and get into shape. Now Ernie, Jean and Hal "make friends easier" and have "outlets for their emotional tensions." But they're still painfully dull.

How Quiet Helps at School (1953)
Social guidance film for young children suggesting that they take their noise out to the playground. ========================================================= Shows how a class can study and work better if the room is quiet. Demonstrates ways to study without interrupting others. Indicates that noise does have a place on the playground. Ken Smith sez: This film starts off dull, but then it gets pretty strange. First, we're taken on a tour of a typical, boisterous grade school classroom ("You couldn't be proud to be part of such a noisy room, could you?" asks the narrator), and then we're taken into the classroom of "Miss Bradley" -- a place where all sound has apparently been banished. Miss Bradley tells us that keeping a classroom this quiet is good because it's "like an office," and that "knowing when to be quiet is a part of growing up." A cheerful geek named "Bobby" then gives several demonstrations of quiet behavior, and the narrator ends the film by asking, "This is a good room, isn't it?" Pretty weird stuff; lots of dead air. Watch for the scenes displaying the strange, tabletop "model farm."

How a child learns to return borrowed items, keep promises and fulfill assignments. ======================================================================== Provides examples of trustworthiness--returning borrowed articles, keeping promises and doing a good job with assigned tasks. Ken Smith notes: This film follows young "Eddie" as he learns to become trustworthy. Actually, "trustworthiness" in this film is pretty loosely defined -- it seems to be synonymous with "obedience" and "conformity." Eddie, at the prodding of his dad and the narrator, quickly and eagerly sees the value of trust (he even makes his own Trustworthiness Chart), and we leave the film knowing that Eddie is well on his way to normalcy. "People have to show they can be trusted with little things if they want to be trusted with big things."

I Want to Be a Secretary (1941)
Follows a young woman through her clerical training and job search. Shows pre-World War II offices and office workers, primarily women. One of Coronet's earliest educational films. ================================================================= DISCUSSES CLERICAL APTITUDES & POINTS OUT THE PREPARATION NEEDED BEFORE ONE CAN BECOME A SECRETARY. Ken Smith sez: Great title, but the muddled soundtrack and bargain basement production of this early Coronet effort make it less satisfying than other Òcareer womanÓ films. The stilted interaction between the aspiring secretary and her various elders is okay, but nothing to write a memo about. This film's soundtrack was re-recorded when it was re-scripted and re-edited down to a 10-minute version in 1951. It was then remade in 1954 as the less-dogmatic Do I Want To Be A Secretary? For teenagers, honesty can come easy or hard, depending on the stakes. ========================================================================== Shotlist Analyzes students' understanding of honesty, showing that they don't have much trouble with simple honesty, but in some situations, where honesty is a much deeper problem, complications arise. 21:10:31 Teen boys in locker room getting dressed for a game 21:10:49 Bob comes back to locker room to take something from someone else's locker 21:12:00 Bob comes back to locker room to take something from a locker 21:12:13 Same scene again - this time tracking shot reveals witness 21:12:58 Teen boy awake at night thinking 21:16:05 Bob in locker room again, this time more obviously stealing money Ken Smith sez: Did basketball star Bob really steal money out of Ben's locker? Since this is a Coronet film he probably didn't, but the characters in this production have to flesh out the truth for themselves. Lots of deep self-examination of motives and what was and wasn't seen, lots of interplay with the camera, and acting that's actually pretty good. There's even a plot twist, when "Rose" confesses her real reason for ratting to the coach about Bob. "I can just see it," she says, as the camera dollies in for a CU of her glazed eyes. "You'll get Bob off the team and Terry will become the regular center. MY Terry. He'll be the star of the team. And I'll be sitting on top of the world!" Whew, pretty heady stuff for Coronet. All in all, a tight little film; an example of Coronet's social guidance style at its peak. The actors deliver their lines with exactly the same cadence and emphasis as they would later in Going Steady? and How To Say No. Also, as in those films, this Coronet production has no narrator.
